As part of My Secret Circus Mini Tour I made my way to the Evelyn hotel in Fitzroy for a late night rock show on Saturday. On my way to see Melody Black and My Secret Circus I realised that my hay fever and sleep deprivation was worse than I initially thought. Once I got to the venue and made myself comfortable I had a combination of caffeine and anti-histamines in the hope that I could get through the show.

As soon as the Sydney support Melody Black started I totally forgot my ailments and was instantly entertained. It was rock with a touch of metal. ‘Love your Demons’ and ‘We both know’ were well received by the crowd of fans, but other songs such as ‘TV Generation’ would have been enhanced if a little crowd participation had been encouraged.

Melbourne band My Secret Circus have been climbing from strength to strength and their dedication was evident. The show started in the dark with the band members coming out onto the stage one by one and then started with their song ‘Fear’. The song choice was great and instantly had the crowd energised.

My usual gripe with local bands is that their sound isn’t refined and they usually don’t work in harmony on stage but this was not the case here – the band’s sound was crisp and well rehearsed. I will admit that I am not a big fan of their new stuff from their upcoming EP, although the sound is more accessible (and more commercially viable). The metal hardcore sound won out over the metal verses with the melodic rock choruses.

The two closing numbers were great but for different reasons. For ‘War Games” Frontman Daniel Mazarita donned a Greek warrior headdress which was a great contrast from the rest of the show. The final song ‘Remember Me’ was more memorable for the thrash dancing of the enraptured crowd.

On a night where leaving the house was the last thing on my mind I discovered that Melbourne has produced a great Australian rock band that is going places and I would happily see them again when they tour.
